The History of Bricks

Brick is the oldest construction materials. Before our time, enjoyed a great spread of unfired adobe brick, but despite this, the stories, there are cases when used burnt brick. Bricks began its history in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Ancient Rome, this is where bricks used for the construction of complex structures, which included arches, vaults and other items. While brick somewhat different re today, that old analogue was more square and flat (sides about 30-60 cm, thickness of 3-9 cm).

However, the Tower of Babel was constructed of brick. So for that matter of fact was Babylon, the Sakkova stepped Pyramid, the Great Wall of China and Bengal’s Paharpur Temple to name but a few other mighty ancient structures.

The oldest type of brick in the Western Hemisphere is the adobe brick. Adobe bricks are made from adobe soil, comprised of clay, quartz, and other minerals, and baked in the sun. Adobe soil can be found in dry regions throughout the world, but most notably in Central America, Mexico, and the southwestern United States. The Romans made use of fired bricks, and the Roman legions, which operated mobile kilns, introduced bricks to many parts of the empire. Roman bricks are often stamped with the mark of the legion that supervised their production.

Up until the mid 19 th century technology brick production was at a low level and demanding too much focus. Forming brick conducted by hands, drying produced only in the warm season, and fired bricks produced in primitive furnaces. Only at the end of the 19 th century were able to create an annular kiln, belt press, as well as machines that make processing of clay. All this has translated the technology of manufacturing bricks to a new level. Today, as most of the bricks produced in automated factories with great performance.

Today, brick, perhaps, is at the peak of its evolution. Its properties are almost perfect, a whole set of species, he became an order of magnitude stronger, resistant to water and frost.
